Maurice Estève

25 May - 30 June 2023
Overview
The choice of the London gallery Stoppenbach & Delestre departs today from its well-known interest in 19th- and early 20th-century paintings by presenting a collection for an itinerant art-lover, captivated by works on paper by Maurice Estève (1904-2001), a French artist who left his mark on the second half of the 20th century. The unique nature of this face-to-face would certainly not have left him indifferent, and would undoubtedly have called out to him.
Art defies the rules of time and forgets all about frontiers.

Monique Prudhomme Estève

Culan, February 2023

We are delighted to announce our forthcoming monographic exhibition of Maurice Estève (1904-2001). Mainly focusing on his works on paper, the exhibition has at its centre thirteen stunning watercolours (from 1957 – 1993), showcasing the artist’s emphasis and application of colour and form utilising this distinctive medium, alongside drawings, collage, paintings and signed, editioned lithographs.

Inspired by the works of Poussin, Fouquet and Cezanne, this mainly self-taught artist worked tirelessly following his own path and vision using colour in organic forms. Quickly recognised by his peers and galleries in the 1950’s, he paved the way for artists of the following generation. Estève's oeuvre undeniably established a new pictorial language: form and colour were embodied by lyricism, expressed with an almost poetic attitude, which makes an essential figure of abstraction.

This is only the second exhibition of his work in the UK and has been with the collaboration of Madame Prudhomme- Estève. We are also proud to present a beautiful catalogue to accompany the exhibition, which includes full images of all of the works.
