Maxime Maufra French, 1861-1918
23 5/8 x 28 3/4 inches
In 1898, Maufra called for the development and the recognition of modern art from Brittany to reinforce the independence and patriotism of the region.
More than ever Breton, he once more represents the landscapes of the Finistere that he loves.
This painting shows the bay of Douarnenez, among the cliffs of Polhor, in Morgat. A scene Maufra represented several times, as two other paints entitled ‘Cote de Bretagne, Le Calme’ and ‘Les falaises de Polhor, Morgat’ showing the bay and the cliffs from various points.
The purity of forms and the simplicity of the colours reflect his interest in the movement of Synthetism.
The orange sunlight through the clouds, highlights the white cliffs and gives the atmosphere of late afternoon. The contrast between the blue and yellow recalls the strong colors of Pont-Aven School.
